A Taste of Alexandria

Be a traveler, not a tourist when you visit the Washington DC Metropolis and take it all in like the locals. One of the best parts about traveling is exploring and experiencing everything you don’t get to at home. You probably have an idea of what all you’d like to see and do on your trip, but what about where you’ll dine? From street food to brunch and fine dining, Alexandria has it all. Check out this list of our favorite Alexandria area restaurant categories!

  • Brunch: Weekend brunch is the thing to do in Alexandria, as it’s an all day affair. Start your day with free breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express Alexandria- Fort Belvoir then head to King Street order off the lunch end of the brunch menus. From traditional brunch foods to unique and eclectic, your Alexandria brunch options are endless.
  • Outdoor Eats: Summer is the season of patio wining and dining. Grab a bite at a local pub, indulge in classic dishes on a rooftop balcony, or humor that sweet tooth by stopping at an ice cream shop patio.
  • Presidential Dining: So you’re in the DC area and want to eat like the locals….why not try a few presidential hotspots! Dine at the Obama and Bush families favorite local eateries or try out the pubs and taverns our first president frequented.
  • Wine a little: Virginia is the Napa Valley of the East Coast, so wine a little while you have the chance! Rich in flavor, our variety of locally made Virginia wines will pair with anything. Head to the Potomac River for a glass of wine and a view to unwind at the end of a long day.

The Holiday Inn Express Alexandria-Fort Belvoir is conveniently located with free transportation to get you where you need to go. Lucky for you, these Alexandria restaurants aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, so book your DC area stay when it’s most convenient for you!

A Summer Escape at Mount Vernon

Planning a summer escape to DC? Your to-do list is probably quite long. After-all, there’s a lot to do and see this season in Washington DC! You’ve undoubtedly got all the big ones covered: The National Mall, The Capitol, The Smithsonian, and of course touring the home of our nation’s president. But don’t forget about the area’s more hidden gems, like George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate.

This summer, Mount Vernon is giving you the chance to tour without the crowds. Take a glimpse at all they’re hosting:

Join renowned artist Steve Fleming in a two-day watercolor class on the beautiful grounds of Mount Vernon.

Enjoy a cocktail buffet and private tours of the mansion at this reception to support the Project Archivist position. The proceeds from this charity event will go towards helping “preserve the history of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association.”

There’s no better place to sip wine and watch the sunset over the Potomac than at the home of George Washington. Another plus – it’s a private evening event, so no daytime crowds!

We think it’s only appropriate that you celebrate Father’s Day with the Father of our Country! Enjoy a George Washington presentation followed by a special Father’s Day BBQ.

Appropriately so, Mount Vernon Estate is hosting an all-day 4th of July event. Enjoy military reenactments, fireworks over the Potomac, birthday cake, and a “Red, White, and Blue” concert to celebrate the independence of our country!

These week-long adventures are designed for your little ones! They’ll learn about George Washington’s legacy though hands-on activities in archaeology, farming, gardening, spinning, and surveying.

Washington sure loved his whiskey! Learn all about how whiskey was created during Washington’s time followed by a whiskey tasting and dinner at the estate’s restaurant!

The Holiday Inn Express Alexandria-Fort Belvoir is located only 6 miles from the estate, making it one of the closest hotels to Washington’s Mount Vernon. We offer a special Mount Vernon Hotel Deal and are also located just minutes from your other favorite DC destinations! Call us at (888) 765-6704 or book your DC area room online before they fill up!
