Military Ball Season comes to Alexandria and the D.C. Area

Marine Corps Birthday Ball CeremonyFall has arrived and with it comes Military Ball season. From the Coast Guard’s Commandant’s Ball on November 1st  to the Marine Corp Birthday Ball on November 8th, the Alexandria area comes alive with elegant dresses, formal uniforms and dashing tuxedos.  It’s an exciting time for Alexandria area military communities to come together, celebrate honored traditions, honor those who have sacrificed and dress up in their best.

Many spouses are anxious about what to wear to a military ball, what to expect at their first military ball and how best to honor their service member.  Here are a few key things to remember to make your first military ball experience an enjoyable evening:

  • Remember this is a work function and you’re representing your spouse.  Keep this in mind as you select your attire, your conversation topics, and as you decide on how many times to visit the bar.
  • Match your attire to your spouses.  There are numerous blogs that give great advice on appropriate military ball dress. The common theme: be comfortable, keep the dress code in mind and don’t show too much skin.  There are many online resources with specific tips for selecting your military ball gown with links to local resources for purchasing the perfect military ball dress.
  • Put your phone on silent and don’t look at it during the ceremony.
  • Be mindful of your alcohol intake.  Remember you’re around people your spouse works with, for and possibly works for him or her.
  • Holiday Inn Express Alexandria-Fort Belvoir hotel guest roomIf your ball is taking place more than a few miles from home, consider getting a hotel room in the area.  If you plan to have drinks, this just makes sense, and it’s a way to extend the fun of this exciting night!
