2017 Presidential Inauguration: What to Expect

Tomorrow marks one of the most important global events that takes place right here in D.C.: the presidential inauguration. This year’s ceremony will be a particularly important one, as President-elect Donald J. Trump represents a significant departure from the previous 44 commanders-in-chief.

If you are planning on being in the District on Friday, here’s some information about the schedule of events and the logistics of getting in and out of the city.

Getting to the 2017 Presidential Inauguration

Because of the many blockades and road closures that will be in effect on inauguration day, driving into the city is a bad idea. The Memorial Bridge, 3rd St. Tunnel, and huge stretches of Pennsylvania, Constitution and Independence avenues will all be closed.

If you’ll be within a few miles of the National Mall, your best bet is to walk or ride a bicycle – Capital Bikeshare has over 400 stations in the city. If you’re coming from further out, you can take the metro, but expect crowded metro cars, long lines, and delays. Trains will run on rush-hour schedule all day; the Archives, Federal Triangle, Mt. Vernon Square, Pentagon, and Smithsonian stations will all be closed for the day. For more tips from WMATA, check their website.

Schedule of events for the 2017 Presidential Inauguration

Metro will open at 4 AM Friday morning. President-elect Trump will be sworn in at noon on a stage set up on the West Lawn of the Capitol building. The ceremony will be followed by an inaugural address from both Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence.

After the ceremony, there is a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. Standing on the sidewalk anywhere between 3rd street and 15th street should provide a good vantage point for the ceremony.

Finding a hotel for the 2017 Presidential Inauguration

Most hotels in D.C. itself will be sold out or priced higher than usual. Consider a nearby alternative like the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alexandria – Fort Belvoir. With a complimentary shuttle to the metro, comfortable room amenities and a free breakfast, the Holiday Inn is an excellent place to stay whether you plan on visiting the District for the 2017 inauguration or any other time of the year.

The 2017 Washington Capitals – Season and Highlights

Attending a Capitals game is a must for any local or visitor traveling to D.C. We’re about halfway through the 2016-2017 NHL season and the District’s favorite hockey team is off to a great start. The Caps play at the Verizon Center in Chinatown, one of the area’s most vibrant and colorful neighborhoods.

How are the 2017 Washington Capitals doing?

The Caps are in great shape at this point in the season. Their 27-9-5 record is good for second-best in the NHL, trailing only their conference rival Columbus Blue Jackets. On Wednesday, the Caps beat their longtime rival Pittsburgh Penguins with a solid 5-2 victory, their seventh in a row. Team star Alexander Ovechkin reached 1,000 points during the game – his 880 game pace makes him the second-fastest active player to reach 1,000 besides hockey legend Jaromir Jagr.

Upcoming home games

The Caps have two big home games coming up: tonight they play at home against the Chicago Blackhawks, and Sunday the 15th they take on the Philadelphia Flyers. In February the Capitals host the Bruins on the 1st and the Carolina Hurricanes on the 7th.

Things to do around the Verizon Center

If you’re heading into Chinatown for a game, there are plenty of other fun attractions nearby:

  • Gallery Place: just across the street from the Verizon Center, this entertainment complex includes a Lucky Strike bowling alley, Regal Cinemas theater and multiple dining options.
  • International Spy Museum: immerse yourself into the world of espionage while learning about the tools, tactics, and stories of some of the most famous spies in history. Package deals available for guests.
  • National Building Museum: this lesser-known D.C. museum is housed in a fascinating 19th century building modeled after the Palazzo in Rome – its collection displays and explains great works of architecture, engineering and design.
