Memorial Day Events in Arlington and Washington DC

Memorial Day is a time of celebration and remembrance for our nation.  Mark your calendars now, as Monday May 25, will be here sooner than seems possible and great family-friendly Memorial Day events are planned all over the Alexandria and Washington DC areas.

We invite you to explore the history-rich Arlington National Cemetery Memorial Day experience.  Admission is free and honoring those who have sacrificed in service of the United States of America is a memory not soon to be forgotten.

Highlights of a 2015 Memorial Day visit to Arlington National Cemetery include:

Flags-In – A three hour period when soldiers place flags at more than a quarter million headstones of fallen soldiers.  Each flag is planted precisely one foot in front of a grave marker and perfectly centered.  Watch a Flags-In ceremony on You Tube here.

Changing of the Guard Ceremony – The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which contains the remains of soldiers from WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam is guarded 24 hours a day. Each hour there is a changing of the guard ceremony with a special march and salute.

Memorial Amphitheater Concert and Wreath-Laying Ceremony – The official service of Arlington National Cemetery at 11 am sponsored by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington

Women In Military Service For America Memorial Ceremony – Taking place at 4pm on Memorial Day at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery, this includes formal military honors, a keynote address, wreath-laying and the Memorial’s signature event, the scattering of rose petals in tribute to departed comrades.

Flags In Memorial Day Arlington National Cemetary

Visits to Famous Gravesites – Among the notable Americans buried here are Presidents William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Robert Kennedy.

Once again, law enforcement officers from all over the nation will converge in Washington DC for National Police Week 2015!

What is National Police Week?

We’re glad you asked. In 1962, President John. F Kennedy signed a proclamation that declared May 15th as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” and the week in which this day falls officially became known as Police Week.  This year, Police Week will be held May 12-16.

As time has gone on, the national law enforcement officer’s memorial has continued to grow. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers descend upon Washington, DC to take part in a number of events created to honor both survivors and the individuals who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

Here is a quick look at this year’s schedule:

Tuesday, May 12 –
Police Unity Tour – Arrival Ceremony will begin at 2PM at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Begun in 1997, the Police Unity Tour has raised nearly 16 million dollars for the NLEOMF.

Wednesday, May 13 –
27th Annual Candlelight Vigil @ 8 PM, sponsored by NLEOM, no tickets required.
Fraternal Order of Police DC Lodge #1 Events, 11 AM – 2 AM; enjoy music, entertainment, food and a bar.

Thursday, May 14 –
National Police Survivors Conference and C.O.P.S. Kids/Teens Day 1; held at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center Hotel – family, children and co-worker survivors have opportunities to receive support.
Fraternal Order of Police DC Lodge #1 Events, 11 AM – 2 AM.

Friday, May 15 –
34rd Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service – the service begins at 11 AM and is expected to run approximately two hours. The Wreath Laying Ceremony will be held immediately following the Memorial Service @ the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Fraternal Order of Police DC Lodge #1 Events, 11 AM – 2 AM.

Saturday, May 16 –
National Police Survivors Conference and C.O.P.S. Kids/Teens Day 2.

While there is an official schedule of events throughout the week, the city will be bustling with ad hoc meetings relative to the Police and their staff. These meetings can be as much of an attraction for attendees as the event itself.

Although there are still three months until Police Week kicks off, between 25,000 and 40,000 are expected to attend and D.C. area hotel rooms will begin to go quickly so consider Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alexandria – Fort Belvoir! Winter and Spring Events at Mount Vernon

Winter and spring 2015 bring new special events and educational opportunities to Mount Vernon.   History buffs and music lovers will appreciate the special programming on the estate’s updated calendar.


An exclusive series of concerts performed by members of the National Symphony Orchestra featuring chamber music and a brief educational talk about Mount Vernon history will delight all that attend.

Each performance will be followed by a reception with champagne and gourmet chocolate with the musicians.  Concert dates are February 24th and March 24th at the Robert H and Clarice Smith Auditorium.
