Celebrate George Washington’s Birthday in Alexandria VA

Celebrate George Washington's Birthday in Alexandria

There’s no better place in America than Alexandria to celebrate the anniversary of George Washington’s birth.  The second weekend in February when the rest of the United States is celebrating President’s Day, Alexandria will be celebrating George Washington’s Birthday.  In fact, the city will celebrate the anniversary of the General’s birth the entire month with exciting celebrations and events.

A highlight of the month-long celebration is the George Washington Birthday Parade, the “largest parade celebrating Washington’s Birthday in the USA!”  The parade starts at 1:00 p.m. and winds along a one-mile route through the historic streets of Old Town Alexandria.

With more than 140 locations in Alexandria associated with President Washington, the self-guided walking tour “Washington’s Footsteps” will educate and entertain as you explore locations where the Nation’s first President worshiped, socialized, and conducted business.

Alexandria restaurants are invited to participate in the “Cherry Challenge”, a favorite of foodies and cherry-lovers.  Revelers are encouraged to sample each participating restaurant’s Cherry-themed drink, starter, entrée and dessert and vote for their favorite.  Participating restaurants are listed on the Washington’s Birthday website.

The Birthnight Banquet and Ball on February 14th re-creates the famous celebration of Washington’s Birthday set in the year 1799.  The event at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum includes an 18th-century buffet, English country dancing and appearances by General and Mrs. George Washington.  Prepare for your first ball event with 18th Century dance classes in the weeks leading up to the ball.  Visit the Museum website for more information.
