George Washington's 281st Birthday Celebration

Throughout the month of February, the city of Alexandria honors the birth of George Washington with celebrations, get-togethers and tours. Many people across the country have the notion that this February holiday is actually “President’s Day.” Yes, we refer to it as that, but call a spade a spade; this is a national holiday dedicated to the father of this great land of ours.

The birthday celebration has taken place since the time of the Revolutionary War. It has grown to include a parade, a race, a birthnight ball, re-enactments and so many more activities you can take part in on an almost daily basis. As a kickoff to the celebration, the Birthnight Banquet & Ball is held at Gadsby’s Tavern, and once upon a time was attended by Washington himself.

The following morning, the George Washington Classic 10k and 2k Fun Run races will start on Eisenhower Avenue at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. The Revolutionary War re-enactment will take place Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at Ford Ward Park. Monday the 18th, the George Washington Birthday Parade will make its way through Old Town Alexandria.
