Día de los Muertos Costume & Dance Party

In the eery spirit of Halloween celebrate the 4th Annual Day of the Day at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. The Art of Remembrance exhibition will be Día de los Muertos October 29th through November 4th. Come dressed in your best Dia de los Muertos costume ready for Day of the Dead themed artwork, and the costume contest and dancing to live music. The art exhibit will feature artist-made altars, and the dance party will be Friday night 8-11pm. Tickets for the party are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, $35 for two or $10 for students with ID.

On the weekend of Halloween Día de los Muertos costumes the Torpedo Factory will become a zombie filled art museum hosting fun activities and traditional practices of the Mexican and Latin American Holiday in which family and friends gather to remember their lost loved ones who passed. During Dia de los Muertos it is typical for families to not only build altars to the dead, but also honor them with flower, candles, food, drink, momentos and other offerings. It’s a holiday about celebrating life and death, and it’s all going on at the Torpedo Factory Art Center October 29th – November 2nd!

Halloween Extravaganza at Bucket List Boutique

All day long on Sunday, October 28th, the Bucket List Boutique will be hosting a Halloween Extravaganza. Between 9am and 5pm families can purchase decorations while sporting their own Halloween costumes. Once you’ve bought the decorations receive free tips on decorating for the holidays. Watch make-up demonstrations, while munching on cookies washed down with sips of hot cider. There’s a spooky garden created for whoever is willing to venture through. Celebrate Halloween the boutique way this year and find fun and crafts for everyone:

Art On the Rocks Cocktail Competition

on the rocks whiskey stonesSee mixologists come up with art-inspired drinks along with live music, appetizers and other forms of art at Art On the Rocks Wednesday, October 24th. Attendees get to sample the colorfully concocted cocktails and vote for their favorite one. There will also be a drawings for prizes. Lots of cool art and lots of cool drinks can be found at the 2012 Art On the Rocks!

Local mixologists will be participating in the cocktail competition from eateries and pubs like: The Light Horse Restaurant, Union Street Public House, Columbia Firehouse, Chadwicks, Bastille and Red Rocks Pizza Napoletana. Jam to the sounds of the Gassmann Duo performing live at Art on the Rocks. It’s all going down (drinks and festivities) from 6pm to 9pm! Of course you must be 21 years of age and older to attend the “Hump Day” drink fest, and limited tickets will be available at the door. See how “On the Rocks” can take on a whole new meaning when coming from an artist’s perspective.

17th Annual Alexandria Arts Safari at Torpedo Factory Art Center

Kids will LOVE the Art Safari taking place at Torpedo Factory Art Center!Arts safari This free event is on Saturday, October 13th between noon and 4pm. During the 17th Annual Alexandria Arts Safari children will participate in all kinds of craft activities. In addition to hands-on arts, the Art Safari also features a scavenger hunt, 19th century Alexandria potters exhibit and drawing for a free prize!

Your kids can be a part of the creation of the Torpedo Factory’s next new piece of work when they help make a giant paper-mache animal that will be up year round! They can also enter to win free tickets from the Potomac Riverboat Company at the welcome table. Watch as they create their own take-home drawings made in The Alexandria Archaeology Museum, child at potters wheeland kids will also learn the designs applied to salt-glazed stoneware pottery by 19th century potters.

It’s a great way to cap off American Craft Week which is October 5-14! Families are sure to have a delightful time at the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s 17th Annual Alexandria Arts Safari! This is one occasion where your kids WON’T have to “keep your hands to yourself”. The Art Safari encourages hands-on fun, big imaginations and creative learning.
